Smoother Mornings: Ditch the PJs!
December 10, 2022Make Them Feel Important! Build and Foster
February 10, 2023Hi Everyone,
Have you heard of The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman? Well, did you know that there is another version specifically tailored for children? It's called The 5 Love Languages of Children, and I believe it's a must-read for all parents.
We often hear stories of parents trying to convince, bribe, or talk their children into behaving or completing necessary tasks, only to find that nothing seems to work. One possible reason for this struggle could be that they are not speaking their child's love language.
Discovering a Child’s Love Language
Here's a quick tip that can make a world of difference: Coach parents to ask their sons or daughters to fill in the blank, "I know my mommy/daddy loves me because he/she ______."
By directly asking children how they perceive love, parents can gain invaluable insights into their child's love language.
A Child's Love Language Can Be:
acts of service
quality time
words of affirmation
physical touch or
receiving gifts
Understanding this love language allows parents to communicate love in a way that resonates deeply with their child.
Do Love Languages Change?
It's important to note that a child's love language can change as they grow and mature. Therefore, ongoing communication and observation are key to identifying and adapting to their evolving needs. My favorite time to ask is at the dinner table. We are all present and interacting with each other.
How to Apply This in Your Practice
I encourage you to take the time and ask the same question to your pediatric caseload. Make a note of it in their chart. By understanding and incorporating their love language into your treatment sessions, you can create a more meaningful and rewarding experience for both the child and their parents.
Imagine the positive impact when children feel loved and appreciated in their own unique way. It fosters a sense of security, strengthens the parent-child bond, and can greatly enhance the effectiveness of therapy sessions.
The Power of Love
Remember, love is a powerful tool that can transform relationships and create a nurturing environment for children to thrive. So, let's embrace the power of love languages and make love the foundation of our interactions with children.
Discovering and speaking a child's love language is a beautiful journey that lasts a lifetime.
That's all for now,
Laura
